It's the eternal sealed-product question: do you buy the box, or pick up packs as you go? Here's the honest maths, using Disney Lorcana: Reign of Jafar as the example.
The numbers
A Reign of Jafar booster box contains 24 factory-sealed packs. At £140, that works out at about £5.83 per pack, against £6.00 for a single booster pack. Every pack, box or single, contains the same 12 cards: 6 Commons, 3 Uncommons, 2 Rares or better, and a guaranteed foil.
So a full box gives you 288 cards, 48 cards of Rare rarity or above, and 24 foils - and saves you money against buying the same packs one at a time.
When the box is the right call
- You're building a competitive deck and need playsets - volume matters
- You're chasing Super Rares and Legendaries and want the most swings at them
- You want a sealed box for the shelf - factory-sealed display boxes hold their appeal with collectors long after a set leaves print
- You simply love opening packs (no judgement - it's the best part of the hobby)
When packs make more sense
- You're new to the game and want a taste of a set before committing
- You're topping up - you've opened your box and just want a few more swings
- It's a gift, a stocking filler, or a prize night treat
- Your budget this month says £6, not £140 - the hobby should be fun, not stressful
A note on honesty
You'll see shops promise "guaranteed hits" from sealed product. We won't. Lorcana packs are randomised - that's the whole point - and the only guarantees are the ones printed on the box: the rarity breakdown and the foil in every pack.
